    Dear Friends,

    Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was running for the first time yesterday night 9/10/08. The LHC first beam event was successfully injected. It was at 9:15 am CERN, Switzerland-France time zone and 10:15 pm US Central Time and 8:15 pm California Time.

    The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons charged with approximately 7 TeV of energy (14 TeV center of mass energy).

    People are so excited about this milestones research for understanding the beauty of nature and the origins and evolution of the universe with expectation for few discoveries and new physics. The LHC events made international communities got so excited as well.

    Antimatter is sort of like matter’s evil twin
    Because except for charge and handedness of spin
    They’re the same for a particle and its anti-self
    But you can’t store an antiparticle on any shelf
    Cuz when it meets its normal twin, they both annihilate
    Matter turns to energy and then it dissipates

    When matter is created from energy
    Which is exactly what they’ll do in the LHC
    You get matter and antimatter in equal parts
    And they try to take that back to when the universe starts
    The Big Bang – back when the matter all exploded
    But the amount of antimatter was somehow eroded
    Because when we look around we see that matter abounds
    But antimatter’s nowhere to be found.
    That’s why…

    The Higgs Boson – that’s the one that everybody talks about.
    And it’s the one sure thing that this machine will sort out
    If the Higgs exists, they ought to see it right away
    And if it doesn’t, then the scientists will finally say
    “There is no Higgs! We need new physics to account for why
    Things have mass. Something in our Standard Model went awry.”

    But the Higgs – I still haven’t said just what it does
    They suppose that particles have mass because
    There is this Higgs field that extends through all space
    And some particles slow down while other particles race
    Straight through like the photon – it has no mass
    But something heavy like the top quark, it’s draggin’ its ***
    And the Higgs is a boson that carries a force
    And makes particles take orders from the field that is its source.
    They’ll detect it….

    Now some of you may think that gravity is strong
    Cuz when you fall off your bicycle it don’t take long
    Until you hit the earth, and you say, “Dang, that hurt!”
    But if you think that force is powerful, you’re wrong.
    You see, gravity – it’s weaker than Weak
    And the reason why is something many scientists seek
    They think about dimensions – we just live in three
    But maybe there are some others that are too small to see
    It’s into these dimensions that gravity extends
    Which makes it seem weaker, here on our end.
    And these dimensions are “rolled up” – curled so tight
    That they don’t affect you in your day to day life
    But if you were as tiny as a graviton
    You could enter these dimensions and go wandering on
    And they'd find you...

    Siaran pers dari CERN hari ini mengkonfirmasi bahwa LHC terpaksa diistirahatkan (shutdown) sampai setidak-tidaknya awal 2009. Keputusan ini diambil setelah terjadi insiden Jum'at lalu, yang menyebabkan terjadinya kerusakan dalam salah satu sektor LHC yang memerlukan waktu 2 bulan untuk perbaikan.

    Latar Belakang:

    LHC pada dasarnya menggunakan gaya magnet/Lorentz untuk
    'menyetir'/'mengendalikan' berkas partikel dalam akseleratornya. Prinsip kerja yang sama juga digunakan layar sinar katoda (CRT/TV) dan osiloskop analog.

    Untuk menyetir berkas proton di LHC, LHC menggunakan lebih kurang (l.k.) 1200 magnet dipole yang masing-masing memberikan medan magnet sebesar 8 Tesla. Medan sebesar itu hanya bisa dihasilkan dengan arus sangat besar pula. Untuk itu, LHC menggunakan magnet superkonduktor, yang beroperasi pada temperatur sekitar 2 K (-271 derajat Celsius) dan didinginkan dengan helium cair.

    Jum'at minggu lalu (19 September), terjadi 'quench' dalam salah satu sektor dalam terowongan LHC. 'Quench' adalah istilah yang dipakai jika tiba-tiba sebuah magnet temperaturnya naik hingga di atas suhu kritis superkonduktor, sehingga kehilangan sifat superkonduktornya dan tidak lagi memberikan medan magnet sebesar yang diharapkan. Kemudian ternyata ditemukan kebocoran helium cair dalam terowongan.

    Untuk memperbaiki kerusakan ini, CERN harus terlebih dahulu memanaskan suhu dalam terowongan, menyelidiki penyebab kerusakan, melakukan perbaikan, dan mendinginkan kembali terowongan. Proses memanaskan dan mendinginkan ini memakan waktu paling lama, sehingga total waktu untuk perbaikan diperkirakan 2 bulan (Yang ahli fisika temperatur rendah di Indonesia bisa komentar). Terowongan baru diharapkan dingin kembali sekitar Desember.

    Namun pada bulan Desember, LHC tidak bisa dijalankan, meski perbaikan sudah selesai. Alasannya: tarif listrik pada musim dingin (Desember-Februari) di Swiss sangat mahal ! Dengan demikian CERN terpaksa menunggu sampai musim semi (Maret/April) sebelum bisa kembali menjalankan LHC, disaat tarif listrik sudah turun.

    Ini jelas bukan berita bagus, apalagi setelah hingar-bingar pers dua minggu lalu, dan melihat besarnya harapan bagi LHC dari masyarakat. Namun itulah realita, eksperimen tidak selalu berjalan sempurna, apalagi di awal-awalnya. Para fisikawan yang terlibat eksperimen di LHC terpaksa mengatur jadwal mereka kembali.

    Tetapi tidak perlu berkecil hati, sebab ini 'hal biasa' dan selalu terjadi di semua eksperimen HEP yang saya tahu...;-(. Namanya saja baru 'the first running test'. Masalahnya memang media massa sudah telanjur memberitakan secara bombastis dan tidak proporsional karena mungkin ketidakmengertian. Masak ada yang memberitakan dengan headline semacam : "Eksperimen Big-bang Sukses..." dll. Padahal baru running test, dan itupun tujuan utamanya bukan mereproduksi big-bang... Tapi ini resiko karena alokasi dana yang sedemikian besar sehingga banyak sorotan.

    Kamis minggu lalu (16 Oktobe 2008), CERN mengeluarkan siaran pers tentang kronologi insiden tanggal 19 September 2008 yang mengakibatkan kerusakan pada salah satu dari delapan sektor akselerator LHC.

    Siaran pers ini menarik karena mendiskusikan dengan detail masalah keteknikan (engineering aspect) dari pengoperasian LHC. Aspek-aspek yang dibahas: mechanical engineering, electrical/power system engineering, thermal engineering/cryogenics, safety engineering etc.

    Menurut saya, kasus CERN ini sangat bagus kalau dijadikan materi kuliah/diskusi/makalah untuk program studi Teknik yang terkait. Jarang-jarang ada kasus studi (case study) yang cakupannya sebesar dan seglobal CERN/LHC.
